If you are working from home, you probably spend more time sitting still than you should. If it isn't easy for you to make it to the gym as well, you could be in danger of losing muscle tone, gaining weight, and suffering from an overall decline in fitness. Fortunately, there are several things you can do at your home office to help yourself stay in shape.

Do a Quick Set Whenever You Get Up

You have to get up several times a day for coffee, meals, and just to stretch your legs. Every time you do, take a fast fitness break. Do 10 lunges. Keep a dumbbell by your desk and do a quick 5 reps. Do some squats. It doesn't really matter much what you do, just so long as it is fast enough that you have no problem doing it every time you get up. You may not do much at a time, but the effects really add up.

Go out for a Reflective Walk

When you get to a point in your work where you need to think about what you are doing, don't just sit there and think, go for a walk. You can think just as easily while you're walking, and you might as well get some exercise while you're doing it. Even if you can't get outside, walking around your house still counts, just so long as you're moving.

Get Those Creative Juices Flowing with Some Aerobics

In fact, getting up and moving around can actually help you do your job better. Doing aerobics really gets your blood pumping, to your brain as well as to your muscles. If you need to get your creative juices flowing, do some jumping jacks, cycle on an exercise bike, or anything else that gets your heart pumping. That's one of the advantages of working at home: you don't have to worry about working up a sweat at work.

Work Standing Up

Put your computer and other work equipment on a high counter or table and work standing up. This improves your blood flow and keeps your legs working. It can also boost your work efficiency by making you get your tasks done faster.

Switch out Your Chair for an Exercise Ball

If you don't like the standing idea, then try sitting on an exercise ball instead of a chair. It's easier than standing, but it requires you to work your core muscles a bit to keep yourself balanced. By actively sitting like this, you can help yourself stay fit.

In Conclusion

Just because you're stuck in the house working a sedentary job doesn't mean that you have to let your fitness suffer. With just a few minor changes to your routine, you can still stay active and stay fit.
